Ron's Story

My name is Ronnie. This book tells you what I learned about why people with disabilities have problems and how we can help ourselves.

Growing Up

When I was in high school, I started getting stressed out. The teacher would give me homework that I didn’t know how to do. Lots of the work was hard. So I started getting stressed out. I would have to tell the teacher that I needed to go outside and get some fresh air or I would blow up.

Even though I was in Special Ed, the classes were not easy. Back then, they just put the book in front of me and asked me to read and do a little math. They didn’t really teach me how to do it. They passed me even though I didn’t know how to read or write or spell.

When I got my first apartment, I was very stressed out. There were bills and rent to pay. It is hard to live on your own.

Stuff that you try to do, like taking the buses, stressed me out. It made me want to yell. “This bus is slow and never on time!!!”  Sometimes, I just gave up and went back home and called to reschedule since the buses were late.

Later, someone gave me a bike to ride to appointments. That was better. Riding the bike in the fresh air helped me let the stress go out.
